CHAPTER 8
Way #3: Unplug Her
from a Plugged-In World
Rob was a middle-schooler, and Lexi, a bright-green-eyed, freckle-faced, adorable tween. I was so excited to share one of my all-time favorite movies with them. They could finally absorb and handle the plotline and adventure. So here we were sitting in our little family room, and they were engrossed. I took note of my brilliance as a mom, knowing theyâd be getting a message about pure and true love as they were entertained.
His Way
âWe demolish arguments and
every pretension that sets itself
up against the knowledge of God,
and we take captive every thought
to make it obedient to Christ.â
2 CORINTHIANS 10:5
CORE VALUES: Discernment
and obedience
Just about then, an old geezer in the movie was waddling his way through an underground mine carrying his lantern above his head. Before the word flew out of the characterâs mouth, I remembered it was coming. Oh, no! I thought. Iâd forgotten about this.
â#*&@!â he said.
âWhat did he just say?â asked Rob, incredulous that his mom was letting it through her generally cautious filtering system.
âHe said, â#*&@!â â piped Lexi clear as a bell.
âWHAT did you just say?â said Rob again, clearly not grasping that his nine-year-old sister didnât understand the concept of a rhetorical question.
â#*&@!â She blasted it out again. âNow be quiet, Robby! Iâm watching the movie!â
And on we went, without Lexi even realizing that sheâd just thrown out her first cuss word. Oh, it wasnât the Hiroshima bomb of the language, and she hadnât âwoven a tapestry of profanity thatâs still hanging over Lake Michigan,â but sheâd let a good one fly without even knowing it.
